20/11/08: HotPress.COM - The Enemy Announce Irish Tour

The Enemy have announced a comprehensive Irish tour, which takes them to The Academy, Dublin (April 17); Cyprus Avenue, Cork (18); Dolan’s, Limerick (19); and Roisin Dubh, Galway (20).

Tickets priced €24 are available on Friday November 21.

The trio are currently assembling the follow up to their platinum-selling We’ll Live And Die In These Towns album, with Razorlight, Foals and Zutons man Mike Crossey.

16/11/08: HotPress.COM - The Enemy Head To Belfast

The Enemy have confirmed a by their standards intimate show in the Belfast Spring & Airbrake on April 22, which will cost you £20 to be at.

By then the small but perfectly formed Coventry trio should have released the follow up to their multi-platinum We’ll Live And Die In These Towns debut.

Having heard them preview one of their new songs, ‘Sing When You’re In Love’, at this year’s Murphy’s Live Final in Cork, we reckon the album will be anything but difficult.

The band are also on the bill for Oasis' UK stadium tour next summer, with the possibility that they might nip over for Slane as well.

16/10/08: BBC.COM - Oasis Announce Stadium Tour, The Enemy To Support

Oasis will play a series of outdoor gigs in the UK and Ireland next summer.

The band announced the shows, which include dates at London Wembley Stadium and Manchester Heaton Park, at a press conference on Thursday.

Support on the tour, which also visits Sunderland, Edinburgh and Dublin's Slane Castle, will come from Kasabian and The Enemy.

Noel Gallagher said: "I think these gigs are easily going to be the biggest gigs of next year if not the decade."

He added: "These are the concerts that will go down in people's memories and this is where people will meet future wives. We're bang up for it."

The 2009 tour visits:

  • Manchester Heaton Park - June 6-7
  • Sunderland Stadium of Light - 10
  • Cardiff Millennium Stadium - 12
  • Edinburgh Murrayfield Stadium - 17
  • Slane Castle - 20
  • London Wembley Stadium - July 11-12

Tickets go on sale at 10am on October 24.

Speaking about the bands who will support Oasis, Noel explained: "We always said when we were doing the big super gigs again we would give Kasabian first option.

"As for The Enemy I've liked them since their first ever single. So with the three bands on one night if I was 16 or 17 I'd be here.

"To be honest I'm actually really made up with the bill and when you see it in front of you, you just think, 'What a night out!'. I'm just glad I'll be able to get tickets."

Previously, Noel Gallagher told the BBC Oasis had a giant show planned in their home town.

But the band gave no indication of a wider UK and Irish tour until this afternoon.

The show at Slane Castle on 20 June, 2009, will be the first time they have returned to the venue since they backed REM there 13 years ago.

Oasis are also set to headline the BBC Electric Proms at the London Roundhouse on 26 October with the Crouch End Festival Chorus.

Last weekend's gig in Chicago marked the band's first U.S. appearance.

The BBC said The Enemy went on with its set despite Clarke's injury and Clarke saw a doctor after the performance.

Clarke told NME.com the accident was "an occupational hazard."

"The doctor looked at it after the set and said I'd have to miss a couple of gigs," he said. "I said I'd miss one, but I'm not missing LA."

The BBC said the band canceled a Montreal festival appearance this week but played in Los Angeles as scheduled Wednesday night.

A spokesman for the band said Clarke performed with a bandaged hand.

It was a great night for Coventry music as bands and artists performed at Inspire Bar, Coventry in a fundraising event for Vinny McElvenny. Tom Clarke from The Enemy performed an acoustic set, despite feeling worse for wear with a sore throat. Just two weeks earlier Tom had been performing in Leeds in front of a 35,000 crowd but proved his feet are still firmly on the ground as he returned home to Coventry and belted out a set in front of around 200 guests.

He also performed a T-Rex classic 'Cosmic Dancer' along side The Enemy's 'You're Not Alone', 'Away From Here' and 'We'll Live And Die In These Towns'.

27/05/08 - Coventry Telegraph: 30,000 Invited To City Band's Massive Party In The Park
By Jenny Waddington

COVENTRY'S most successful band, The Enemy, will be playing to the city's biggest open-air festival audience at this summer's Godiva Festival.

Plans are in place to enable the award-winning group to perform to up to 30,000 fans at the War Memorial Park on Saturday, July 5.

Organisers will be moving the stage from where it has stood for festivals for the past 11 years to a larger part of the park.

The new position for the open-air concert will mean that an additional 27,000 fans will be able to see the city's popular band for free.

The stage will be relocated to the bottom quarter of the park - mainly used for junior football pitches - which adjoins the park-and-ride car park.

Bordered by the Coat of Arms Bridge Road, the stage will face towards woodland.

Geoff Makin, environmental health manager for the city council, said: "We have been in discussions with CV One and decided to move the stage to a different area of the park.

"The stage will now be facing up the hill into an area of woodland and just a few houses. This will not only help with the noise, but will also be in a site that has a maximum capacity of 29,999 people."

The Enemy are expected to draw in the biggest open air festival crowds ever seen in Coventry.

To accommodate the large numbers, tighter security measures will be put in place.

Police chiefs in Coventry will be placing double fencing around the park to control the volume of fans.

Other measures include metal detectors at the park entrance and alcohol strips to ensure no alcohol is taken into the park.

Inspector David Blake said: "We are very confident that this year the security will be very good and we will not get the problems we have had in the past."

For the first time, the festival will be an alcohol-free event, although drinks can be bought on site at a licensed bar within a fenced area.

Due to the open-air event, sound levels will increase and an application has been submitted to the noise team at Coventry City Council.

Any objections need to be submitted before June 4 and will be put to a public hearing.

Hottest bands in the UK join Godiva line-up

THE line-up for this year's Godiva Festival has been revealed - featuring two bands which are set to make big news on the music scene.

The Telegraph has been told exclusively that Exit Calm will be making an appearance at the forthcoming musical event.

Mentored by the same Coventry manager who took The Enemy to number one, the band are tipped to be the next big thing this year.

The four-piece group, who are from Barnsley, have proved so good that their number-one fan is The Verve's Nick McCabe.

As well as Exit Calm, the festival - which is likely to be the biggest ever - will also include Glasvegas, who have also been tipped for the top by music mogul Alan McGee, the man who discovered Oasis.

The band is one of the hottest groups in the UK and have recently signed to Columbia and have already won the Philip Hall Radar Award at the NME awards in March.

Their live performance is fifties Rock 'n' Roll brought right up to date with large helpings of the Jesus and Mary Chain's feedback.

Glasvegas are set to release their much-anticipated debut album - which has been recorded in New York, in the late summer.

Both bands - alongside Coventry's most successful band The Enemy - are expected to draw in the crowds at the city's War Memorial Park.

Mick McLaughlin, CV One communications and marketing manager, said: "This year's Godiva Festival is set to be the biggest and best yet.

"We have a variety of performances across the weekend to suit all tastes, including reggae sensations Inner Circle and Tippa Irie playing the main stage on Friday night.

"Other acts for the Friday include live DJ's such as Jay Nana and Jonny Mac and stand-up comedy from the likes of Ivan Brackenberry and Rufus Hound."

Also appearing will be Six By Seven, who are regarded as one of the most exciting new names in UK guitar based music after the release of their first single "European Me".

Critically-acclaimed band Art Brut - who previously opened for Oasis - will be included in the line-up, along with The Displacements.

The Ripps, who are recording their second album, will feature along with Pint Shot Riot and Dogfight Revolution.

Mick added: "Hundreds of dancers, musicians and performers will be wearing colourful costumes on spectacular wooden floats, which will weave its way through the city centre on Saturday, an extravaganza that has taken place for over 300 years."

* The Godiva Festival will run from Friday, July 4, until Sunday, July 6.

10/04/08 - Coventry Telegraph: The Enemy Go Free!

COVENTRY'S most successful band The Enemy will headline what promises to be the best-ever Godiva Festival.

The award-winning group - currently one of the biggest bands in the country - will be returning to their home city to perform for FREE.

They're likely to attract thousands of fans to the War Memorial Park in July. They performed in front of 15,000 people over two nights at the Ricoh Arena last weekend.

An action plan is being drawn up to deal with the sheer volume of people wanting to see The Enemy, who are the biggest group to come out of Coventry since The Specials almost 30 years ago.

Tighter security measures will be put in place to ensure the Midlands' largest free music festival runs smoothly.

Mick McLaughlin, marketing and communications manager for CV One, said: "We are delighted that the Enemy will be headlining the Godiva Festival on Saturday, July 5.

"They are an amazing band who have achieved enormous success and are fantastic ambassadors for Coventry.

"If last year's festival and their recent appearances at the Ricoh are anything to go by I am sure they will go down a storm and should prove to be one of the highlights of a fantastic festival.

"Obviously, they are certain to attract a lot of interest and security measures will be put in place to ensure the safety of all visitors to the event.

"Further details will be announced shortly regarding this."

Organisers of the free music event are remaining tight-lipped about how they will accommodate what promises to be, the biggest crowd in its 11 year history.

The Enemy got a fantastic reception when they performed at last year's Godiva Festival, filling a 3,000-capacity tent with hundreds more outside.

The band - singer/guitarist Tom Clarke, bassist Liam Watts, from Holbrooks and drummer Andy Hopkins, from Eastern Green - are said to be looking forward to performing for the third year in a row. The first year they were still relatively unknown out-side Coventry.

The War Memorial Park has a capacity of 20,000. In previous years, residents who live near the park have campaigned for restrictions on noise levels.

Police say they will have a greater police presence this year and organisers say steps will be taken to ensure local residents will not suffer.

The festival will run from Friday, July 4, until Sunday, July 6.

Double fence and park gates booze ban to control crowds.

POLICE chiefs have confirmed that a double fence will be put up around the park, controlling the number of people attending the festival.

And once the park is full, a system of one-in, oneout, will be in place with revellers not being guaranteed a chance to gain entrance back into the festival once they have left.

Metal detectors could also be introduced at the park entrance, ensuring visitors are not carrying knives to the event.

Police chiefs are keen to stress that this year, nobody will be allowed to take booze into the park.

Insp David Blake said: "We are very confident that this year the security will be very good and we will not get the problems we have had in the past. Anybody who arrives with alcohol will be asked to either deposit it in a skip or leave the park. We will also be testing soft drinks with special strips to ensure that nobody can sneak alcohol into the venue.

"Once people are inside, there will be areas where they can buy alcohol, but we will be able to control the situation and refuse to serve anyone who we think has had enough."

07/04/08 - BBC Radio 1: The Enemy And The Rev Plan A Hook Up
By Kev Geoghegan

Tom Clarke from The Enemy says he is hoping to collaborate with Reverend and the Makers frontman Jon McClure.

The highly politicised pair have become pals since meeting at a homeless charity gig at London's Roundhouse in March.

Of the lofty leadman, Clarke said: "I think me and Jon are on very similar wavelengths.

"The same things that frustrate him, frustrate me."

McClure, aka The Rev, has recently complained about the lack of young British artists using songwriting as a tool for political and social change. But he admits to admiring Clarke.

Clarke said: "I've been at home before and Jon's just rung me up and we've basically just sat there and said what a state the country is in sometimes."

The admiration runs both ways, Clarke reckons The Rev is setting the standard for writing more socially aware lyrics.

He said: "I think he's one of the few people of our age that watches the news with the same contempt as I do.

"Our generation, I think, just feels like everything is okay and we've been plodding along just getting on with the nine to five and I just think we need to open our eyes.

"Jon is not afraid to say what he thinks is up and that's very rare."

With both bands working on their second albums, Clarke added he's hopeful they will manage to collaborate in the future.

He said: "Yeah I'd love to and I know he's up for it too but both of our schedules are so full at the moment it's been hell trying to organise it."

Many of the tracks on The Enemy's debut album, We'll Live And Die In These Towns, tell of the frustrations of working in dead end jobs in Coventry, having no money and having nothing to look forward to.

Clarke said he'll be sticking to similar themes for the next LP.

He said: "We're out of that situation now but that's not to say that the same things don't frustrate us and the same things don't ignite the fire in your belly.

We've been plodding along just getting on with the nine to five and I just think we need to open our eyes

Tom Clarke
"We've already written a lot of tunes and they're being written from the same place, from the same place in our hearts and the same place in our heads.

"But you'll have to wait and see, I love it."

The band have already showcased one of their new songs during their recent record breaking six night run at London's Astoria.

Clarke explained: "It's called Sing When You're In Love, Sing When You're Out of Love.

"We wrote it, literally about a fortnight ago, while we were in Cov and it's just a dead simple song.

"It's been amazing, people have been singing it while they're learning it."

The Enemy are playing a charity gig on 30 April for the charity Vinvolved, a new scheme to encourage more people to volunteer in their community.

07/04/08 - Official Charts: Album #20 In UK Charts

Sunday's after show party boasts a similarly impressive line up including the likes of The Pockets, Kanute, Circle 3 and Mourning Becomes Electra.

04/04/08 - Tom Clarke's Fender Telecaster Guitar Goes To Auction

Tom Clarke has donated his fender telecaster guitar for auction to help raise money for "Ripple Africa", a charity that seeks to improve the standard of education and healthcare, to preserve and sustainably develop the environment, and to create opportunities for the local community around Mwaya on the northern lakeshore of Lake Malawi. Unlike many other charities "Ripple Africa" aim to give a hand up not a hand out by employing locals rather than spending donations on costly administration overseas.

The guitar that is now on EBAY, is the very one used by Tom Clarke for the videos "Away From Here" and "It's Not OK" and featured at the very early gigs. It is the guitar that has been on tour with The Enemy the most, so is a very important one - it was the same one used at the Coventry Colosseum gig with Specials singer Neville Staples.

Bidding ends April 10th with ALL money raised will go directly to Ripple Africa. The guitar has been signed by Tom, Liam and Andy so hop over to EBAY now and place your bid for this once in a lifetime piece of history memorabilia, doing so you will also be raising money for a well-deserving cause.

04/04/08 - Cumberland News: Cumbrian "Forgotten Valley" Cancelled

A THREE-DAY Cumbrian music festival set to be headlined by Happy Mondays and The Enemy has been cancelled because of “the current financial climate”.

Event director Rob Dunphy admitted he was “devastated” to axe the Forgotten Valley event, which had already sold over 1,000 tickets – priced £60 and £100 – and attracted a string of top names including Reverend and the Makers, The Wombats and New Young Pony Club.

More than 45,000 revellers were expected to flock to the event at the Westmorland Showground, near Kendal, over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

Mr Dunphy said: “I’m personally devastated. The directors and I have been working non-stop to make sure this event could happen. The current financial climate has not helped us. We sincerely apologise to all people that have been involved. I don’t want anyone worrying. Everyone who bought tickets can claim a full refund. I’m now working on plans to host something in 2009.”

For a refund call Ticketline on 0871 424 0047.

02/04/08 - Gigwise.Com: Tom Says "The Astoria Saved From Closure"

Confusion reigns over the future of The Astoria in London following the revelation from The Enemy that the historic venue had been saved for now.

The band are currently playing a six night stint at the venue and revealed to the audience on the second night that it will remain open for some time.

Tom Clarke told the crowd that he had been informed of the news by representatives from The Astoria.

He later told 6 Music: "It's a quality venue and it's a good job it's not getting shut down. They've just signed another lease I've heard, so you can enjoy many more bands in the Astoria, thank God.

"I heard the other day when we there, they've signed a five-year lease, which is quality. No doubt there will be the usual controversy in five years, but it's quality for now that it will stay open."

There has been no official comment from the owners of the venue Live Nation and a spokesperson for the Crossrail scheme which is the reson for the venues reported closure said they could not confirm either way.

However, Festival Republic MD Melvin Benn last night said he believed it would be open until at least 2011.

He was speaking at the launch of this year’s Reading and Leeds festivals.

01/04/08 - Angryape.Com: The Enemy To Play Youth Scheme Awareness Show
 *Picture from: NME.Com
The Enemy will be playing a special show at the end of the month to help raise awareness for a new youth action scheme named Vinvolved.

The scheme aims to get more young people interesting in volunteering in their local communities - something The Enemy got involved with directly themselves, by planting trees and taking part in a volunteer job swap.

Tom Clarke says: "Doing the job swap opened our eyes to the difference volunteers can make. We helped bring green trees to grey spaces."

"It felt good to make a difference to the people living there. Volunteering at festivals is great but there are so many other projects people should know about so we were really pleased to be asked to headline the Vinvolved gig to raise awareness of the opportunities that are out there."

Also playing the show at London's Bloomsbury Ballroom on April 30th, will be Bloc Party, The Rumble Strips and The Thirst. Tickets will be available from April 2nd to people who sign up with Vinvolved.com - they will then be entered into a ballot.

The theme of the track was inspired by the parlour game ‘Consequences’, in which players write a story without seeing each other’s input, each part of the song; drums, bass, guitar, vocals were recorded by artists unaware of what had been laid down before.

The track was built layer by layer, as well as the talent mentioned above the track also features the New Young Pony Club, Drew McConnell (of Babyshambles), Pearl Lowe, and Andy Rourke (The Smiths) amongst others. Artwork was also auctioned on ebay last month to help raise much needed funds for the charity.

All profits from the record will go to Crisis, the national charity for single homeless people, including music and arts projects which enable our members to acquire new skills and find employment. Three of Crisis’ own homeless members also feature on the track, playing guitars and piano.

07/03/08 - BBC -6 Music: Enemy Album Caution

By Matt Everitt

Following the huge success of their debut album We'll Live and Die in These Towns, Coventry trio The Enemy have spoken about their plans for its follow-up.

It appears the band are taking the preparations for their new material very seriously. Or not.

“Over the past week we’ve recorded four concept albums,” singer Tom Clarke jokes. “We’ll be deciding which one to release in the next couple of days and it’ll be out next month.”

“Nah,” he laughs, “We’re writing tunes at the minute. We’ve already written a load while we’ve been on tour, so we’ve already got a load of songs in the bank. But we’ve just been in the studio near home writing as well.

“We’re just taking our time. I think it's more important that you take your time and put out a quality album with good tunes on it, than just rush it.”

As for what the album sounds like, fans can expect something of a stylistic departure.

“Its different.” Tom continues. “It still sounds like us - cos it’s us, but at the same time it’s not just the same as the first one. I think it’d be stupid just to put out an album that was the same as the first.

"I think I’d go insane if I had to play exactly the same kind of stuff for another year. But it’s banging. I like it.”

However, the frontman refused to be drawn on whether any one track was touted as a potential single at this stage, saying: “There’s couple, but we’ve got that many songs on the boil at the minute that we want to wait until we’ve got the finer production points on everything until we decide what’s what.”

07/03/08 - InTheNews.co.uk: Tom Clarke Reignites Arctic Monkeys Feud
Enemy singer Tom Clarke has laid into the Arctic Monkeys after they swept up at the NME awards last week.

Clarke claims the Arctics' domination of awards ceremonies had reached a tipping point.

His comments in the Daily Mirror come after the Arctic Monkeys won best track, best video and best British band at the NME awards; having already walked away with the best British band and best British album (for Favourite Worst Nightmare) gongs at the Brits.

Clarke, whose group were named best band at the NME awards but failed to garner a single Brit nomination, said: "It just shows The Brits and these other awards shows are spineless."

In an interview with the tabloid, he claimed the Sheffield band had only been given the top awards to 'avoid offending anyone'.

"These awards have turned into the Arctic Monkeys show," Clarke continued.

"I suppose you can't begrudge them one award… they have had one good album and one average one.

"But they haven't done anything special this year."

06/03/08 - Gigwise.com: The Enemy Preparing 'Banging' Second Album

The Enemy’s frontman Tom Clarke has promised that the band’s second album will be “banging”.

The band are currently recording songs for the as-yet-untitled LP in a studio just outside their hometown of Coventry.

“We’re just taking our time. I think it's more important that you take your time and put out a quality album with good tunes on it, than just rush it,” Clarke told 6 Music.

Clarke also revealed that the record would sound different from their number one debut, ‘We’ll Live And Die In These Towns’.

“Its different, it still sounds like us - cos it’s us, but at the same time it’s not just the same as the first one. I think it’d be stupid just to put out an album that was the same as the first,” he said.

"I think I’d go insane if I had to play exactly the same kind of stuff for another year. But it’s banging. I like it.”

29/02/08 - NME.COM: Enemy Praises Fans And Blasts Bands At NME Awards

The Enemy paid tribute to their fans as they picked up Best New Band at the Shockwaves NME Awards, but had a harsh word for bands posing at the ceremony.

The trio scooped the prize at last night’s (February 28) ceremony in London, which competition winners were invited to come and watch for the first time.

Speaking to
NME.COM, frontman Tom Clarke thanked the fans for all their support and votes.

“Cheers public. We appreciate it,” he declared. “It’s the people who were on the top balcony who put us on that stage so we gave them a round of applause. It’s great that they’re all in here this year. It’s nice, it gives it a bit more atmosphere.

"There are too many bands that sit there, too cool for school – everyone’s here so don’t pretend you’re not interested – so it’s nice to have them all up there.”

Clarke also revealed his unlikely trophy case for their award.

“Do you know where I think it would look good? In the back of a Vauxhall Nova,” he explained. “It would look great next to a little Churchill dog with the nodding head. It would look class there. Sadly I haven’t got a Nova so if anyone has one for sale give us a shout.”

28/02/08 - The Enemy "Best New Band" At NME Awards:

The Enemy have been awarded "Best New Band" at the NME Awards in London tonight, the Coventry trio beat off competition from the likes of Foals, Joe Lean And The Jing Jang Jong, The Pigeon Detectives and The Wombats. It wasn't all bad news for The Wombats as the Liverpudlian band won "Best Dancefloor Filler" for their hit "Let's Dance To Joy Division".
Arriving at the NME Awards in London Tom Clarke said:

“We came last year when it was at Hammersmith Palais. We just got steaming drunk and danced to Primal Scream. We're playing with the Manics so we'll be down at the gig to watch them. I've never seen Klaxons live so it will be interesting to see them, ‘cause I have got a lot of respect for them. I think they're one of the hardest working bands.”
